Head, Heart and Hands - Clive Ridgway

The Book

This is a book about the art of songwriting. More specifically, the art of words composed to be sung.

The author opens up a unique and fascinating perspective on song as catalyst for transformation. He connects the dots between language and music, making visible the discreet basics great songwriters employ to compose songs that stimulate the imagination, capture the heart and create change.

WHAT THE PROFESSIONALS
HAVE TO SAY ABOUT US …

Francis Grobler

Poet, writer, TV-script writer/presenter, songwriter.

“As a poet, writer, and lyricist, I have been writing songs for respected South African artists for several years. Clive Ridgway of CTSS acted as my mentor in songwriting skills, and I firmly believe that any creative work of art should contain a strong storyline that resonates meaningfully throughout ‘marrow, bone, head, heart, blood, veins and soul of the listener.’ One of the most important things I learned under Clive’s guidance is to ‘trust the process’ and allow myself to be ‘written by the song – not the other way around.’ My appreciation for CTSS is enormous, and I would never have experienced the sweet taste of successful songwriting without Clive’s mentorship.”

Odie Blackmon

Grammy nominated songwriter with numerous #1 hits, associate professor of songwriting at Middle Tennessee State University in the USA.

“You gave the best description of the songwriting process and songwriters that I’ve ever read and never been able to express myself. I found what you have to say to be the most enlightening of any book I’ve read so far. You have a way of going beyond scholarly/academic approaches and making the study of the craft of songwriting understandable and accessible. I am excited about what you are doing…”

Mary Gautier

Grammy nominated singer-songwriter, author.

“I recently read Clive’s book, and it has profoundly changed my perspective on music and songwriting. One of the biggest revelations I had was the important distinction between “music” and “song.” Clive explains that a “song is a composition of both words and notes,” which creates deeper meaning and connection. I found myself thinking, “I knew it, but I didn’t know it, if you know what I mean.” Additionally, Clive’s assertion that “Songwriting is not the domain of the virtuoso, but the brave” resonated with me deeply. Unlike virtuosos who focus on performance and impressing the audience, artist songwriters aim to dissolve the separation between the stage and the seating, seeking to generate compassion and empathy. They convey the message, “I am not better than you, and we are all in the same boat,” fostering a sense of unity and reminding us that we need each other. This book has truly inspired me to embrace the power of songwriting”.

Selim Kagee

EMI Recording artist, singer-songwriter.

“Clive is a rare find in the music industry, and we’re so lucky to have him here in South Africa. He truly cares about the success of each of his songwriting students, going above and beyond to make sure we grasp the ins and outs of songwriting in a way that’s positive, supportive and inspiring. His unique and practical approach has not only helped me understand the craft of songwriting but also how to lay the foundation for real success in the music world. I’m so grateful for everything I’ve learned from him!”

Martin Høybye

Singer-songwriter, PhD, song activist, co-director of Songcrafter Music.

I have taken heart from author and songwriter Clive Ridgway’s work for years. Working with collaborative songwriting, often in precarious and/or impoverished environments, Ridgway’s work always reminds me to trust in the power of song and songwriting to connect with others.

Indeed, songs connect us to one another, they humanize and transform. Songs open up our minds, they open up our hearts. As songwriters we may tacitly know this, but Clive Ridgway presents us with a language to talk about these, often silent, existential truths.

Putting human connection first, front and center, the Cape Town School of Songwriting offers carefully crafted and road tested songwriting tools. Tools that let seasoned songwriters as well as songwriting novices take the next leap onward on their individual journey of songwriting discovery.

Dr. Tian Chen

Engaged Anthropologist, creative entrepreneur, singer-songwriter.

“Clive Ridgway’s songwriting course is truly a transformative experience for any music lover. Drawing from 15 years of teaching experience at the Cape Town School of Songwriting, Clive has crafted a course that goes far beyond the knowledge contained in his masterpiece book, “Head, Heart & Hands: A Brave New Approach to Songwriting”.

One of the highlights is the intimate community fostered within a small group of classmates. Each week, we dive deep into various themes, exploring the intricacies of lyrics, melody, song form, and more. The collaborative atmosphere encourages rich discussions and we analyze examples together, sharing our thoughts and creative insights. Elaine, the school’s amazing hostess, adds a special touch with her delightful wine and snacks, ensuring everyone feels comfortable and nourished as we explore our passion for songwriting. The one-on-one session towards the end of the course is a standout feature, allowing each participant to take their song through an incredible process of development, feedback, production, and performance.

This personalized attention is invaluable for serious songwriters looking to refine their craft. Overall, this course is a unique experience that is hard to match. It’s no surprise that some students have taken it multiple times! Whether you’re a budding songwriter or a seasoned musician, you’ll leave with enhanced skills and a deeper appreciation for the art of songwriting”
